I am sure you’ve all heard that saying ‘You can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ or ‘He or she is set in their ways, there is no use in changing them now’ or ‘We’ve always done things that way’ – in other words I’m happy with the way things are and happy to meander along…

Whilst this is probably ok for a small percentage of people, without acknowledging the need for change in business, let alone life, you can find yourself left behind very easily.

There’s no use sugar coating this, but when I first started with Coretium Media I was possibly the sh*ttest salesman you would have come across…you see I come from a mainly content writing background so my interaction with customers was always after the sale had been made or just writing blogs like this one. But after moving to Coretium, my job role changed and so did the skill set that I had to use. I was now predominantly going to be the guy who was going to convince customers to use our services and honestly I felt like Roy Schieder in the last scene of Jaws…absolutely out of my depth and bricking it.

This is where the first line of this blog comes to the fore…where the old dog had to be taught a few new tricks. Now I am no way in any shape or form saying I am fully fledged salesman but because of my willingness to learn it has made the transition easier…don’t get me wrong I still ‘ummmm’ and ‘aaaahhh’ on the phone like a trooper but I feel more comfortable in my job and in by doing so have added a few more strings to my bow.

Now if I had decided that it was not for me or that I couldn’t be bothered, I would have been left behind like a Morris Minor racing a Ferrari. This is the danger with a lot of people – don’t be that person. At least try…

Change in business is inevitable and the constant need for learning new skills is always there whether we like it or not, you never know you might just surprise yourself…just don’t be that person that who spouts off excuse after excuse as to why you can’t…
