As of late there has been a backlash at social media giant Facebook around what data they collect and how they use it. Now this may stir a bit of controversy but, I am not sure why there is such an outcry. Maybe the masses don’t understand that your data is the payment for using the site. All social media channels collect data on who and how you interact with individuals and brands. This is used to advertise to you from potential brands that relate back to who/what you like, and would have a higher likelihood to purchase.

Now some like Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has lashed out at Facebook practice by explaining ‘with Facebook, you are the product.’ But how is that a bad thing? They provide a service that hosts your photos and videos to be shared with friends and family. You have free access to communicate using messenger at no charge. Whatsapp and Instagram all come without a monthly subscription, so why shouldn’t Facebook and all social media channels use the data they have to gain a profit?

When all is said and done, you do not HAVE to use social media. That is a choice. But those companies do not have to run their business how each of their users (2b in Facebook’s case) want it to be run. They run it to maximise profits for their shareholders and position themselves to use your payment in the best way possible.

So if you are really upset about Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or any other social network collecting and using your data, unplug, walk away and your free. But going on any social media channel and complain about ‘YOUR’ data is being used in a way you don’t like……. Once you put it on those social channels, it is no longer yours…. Read the terms and conditions…..
